Our Vision
Green Steel

Fossil-based Steelmaking is a discontinued Model.
Low-emission steelmaking routes are already being researched and implemented around the world. But when it comes to zero emission, how do you achieve the real deal – and thus green steel?

NAMSTEEL was founded in 2023 in Windhoek, Namibia with the goal of becoming the world’s first 100% CO2-neutral steel mill. The sun as an energy source as well as hydrogen as a reduction agent build the foundation for one of the most advanced and future-proof steel mills in the world. By this, NAMSTEEL aims to become a pioneer in the production of real green steel. Planning for both the solar power plant and the hydrogen-, reduction- and steelmaking-facilities will be completed in 2025.

Our Archimedean Point
Namibia

Not only an industrial Transformation might take Place here ‒ but also a social One. In full awareness of both the challenges of a sustainable economy and our common history, we want to ensure that while we benefit from various location advantages, Namibian society benefits from our endevours as well.

Namibia is located on the Atlantic west coast of southern Africa and, whilst having a population of about 2.5 million, is about 2.3 times the size of Germany. Geographically, Namibia is ideally located for the international movement of goods via sea: the European, North and South American markets can be reached quickly by travelling only the Atlantic, all:

  • without political risks such as piracy or inner instability
  • Without infrastructural risks such as the Suez or Panama Canal
  • Without meteorological risks such as tropical cyclones or extreme cold

Sun becomes Power,
Power becomes Hydrogen,
Hydrogen becomes Steel.

Our Route
Steelmaking

3,500,000,000 kWh is what we call a Start.
How our ambition to achieve zero emission leads to enormous numbers.

The land area intended for the solar power plant is located in the Erongo region and is fully owned by the Tom Ortmanns Investments PTY Ltd, which also serves as the power plant operator. The area has a size of approx. 1,000 ha (10 km²) and, when fully utilised, represents one of the largest solar power plants in the world, generating an annual electrical output of up to 3.5 terawatt hours – this corresponds to the annual consumption of approx. two million European households.
